About

Jaekchi thrives on eclecticism. The Filipino-Armenian artist grew up in the Sydney suburb of Chatswood and later lived all around the city, at times in pockets of poverty which led to stints in crime-fuelled gangs. Inheriting a love of hip-hop from his parents and the streets, his Discman would carry classics like Boyz II Men and 2Pac, and more local icons like Scribe. Still, it wasn't until Jaekchi witnessed the 2016 XXL Freshman cypher - which featured fluid, genre-defiant artists like Lil Yachty, 21 savage and Desiigner - that he fully believed that he could also pick up a microphone.
That cauldron of contemporary influences is evident in Jaekchi's music and aesthetic. His songs range from the woozy autotune of 'Juul' to the bombastic trap bounce of 'Shopping Spree', while the staccato flow of 'Rik N Morty' proved to be Jaekchi's biggest moment yet, collaborating with rap anti-hero Huskii. His aesthetic takes influence from Japanese film, the nostalgic theatrics of professional wrestling and lo-fi Internet culture; often resulting in bursts of hypercolour glitchiness. That unpredictability roots itself in all of Jaekchi's output as an artist, or as he says himself, "I can become the old me with the click of a finger."
Jaekchi will return in early 2023 and he plans to take his music from streaming platforms to stages. With his refreshing arsenal of addictive hooks, new-school flavour and a unique story to tell, Jaekchi is quickly establishing himself as one to watch.
